Synopsis by Thomas Carpenter

This television documentary shows the devastating effects of car crashes and how advances in science and engineering continue to improve the safety of passengers -- advances such as safety glass in windshields, safe knobs, soft dashboards, and the general design of the interior. The work of Dr. Hugh DeHaven, who invented the art and science of crash investigation, is discussed along with the vast improvements in safety that have followed, including the invention of the seat belt, its subsequent improvement, and the efforts to make it mandatory in cars. Finally, the program covers the use of crash test dummies, roll bars, air bags, and crumple zones, among numerous other safety advances, while showing the brutal impact of real and simulated car crashes.
