Synopsis by Alice Day

Who were the first people to invent a writing system? Was it the Maya, who have long been recognized as the first to use an advanced technique to communicate? In Nova: Search for the Lost Cave People, archaeologists have found evidence that a culture known as the Zoque may have accomplished this feat long before the Maya. The discovery of 300 caves in the Chiapas jungle of Central America has provided tantalizing hints of the Zoque and their works. Due to the dry conditions of the caves, artifacts have been well preserved, and as they are analyzed, archaeologists will determine their historical importance.
