Synopsis by Mark Deming
Tony (Jeff Schultz) is a young man from Canada who hasn't figured out what he wants to do with his life, but in the meantime has settled into a lucrative (if risky) part-time job transporting marijuana from Pittsburgh to Canada. Tony's grandmother, Rosa (Viveca Lindfors) has been trying to get a coal company to pay her compensatory damages after the death of her husband following a long bout with black lung. When Tony screws up a delivery and Rosa discussions with the coal men go bad, both find they need to get out of town in a hurry and are forced to travel together, even though Rosa doesn't think much of her grandson's career. North of Pittsburgh reunited director Richard Martin and star Jeff Schultz, who worked together on Martin's first feature, Matinee (1988).
