A fisherman and his wife live on the island of Chiloe off the southwest coast of Chile, but the last few weeks have been disturbing for the woman because her husband has not yet returned from a fishing trip. As she is trying to fight a rising despair, she meets someone with similar problems - a teacher who has lost his job (he was fired) and whose son has disappeared. The two grapple with their sense of loss against the panoramic background of the sea and the island's landscape vistas.
