Synopsis by Forrest Spencer
American football was popularized in the early 20th century and has grown to a mega-million-dollar enterprise of sports teams, merchandising, licensing, and contract deals. Over 14,000 men have played the game in the National Football League, but like any other sport, there are the special athletes whose skills and talents shine through. These men are stars and legends of the game. In this video, 47 NFL athletes are featured, including quarterbacks Johnny Unitas and Joe Montana; linemen Forrest Gregg and Jim Parker; running back Walter Payton; receivers Jerry Rice and Lance Alworth; and defensive lineman Dick Butkus. Using footage from NFL Films Library, this video celebrates the men who played the game and elevated its stature and dominance within the American sports entertainment arena.
