Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

Using as its spine the letters which passed between a Dutch civil servant and his wife as he returns to the city of Batavia in the Dutch East Indies after World War II, this combination documentary and docudrama tells the tale of the waning days of colonial rule in what later became Jakarta, Indonesia. After the Japanese showed the locals that the white man could be beaten, independence-minded locals took heart, and it was only a matter of time before the European rulers were sent packing.
