Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man looking for a better life finds things getting even worse when he meets in a girl in this independent British drama. Mick (Elliott Jordan) lives and works in Basildon, a small pre-fab community near Essex, where he shuffles papers in an office all week and gets drunk in the pubs with his friends all weekend. Unknown to his friends and co-workers, Mick has been dealing with severe depression and has been taking Prozac given to him by a local doctor, though he seems wary of the drug. One night, Mick is out draining pints with his mates when he runs into Nicki (Katharine Peachey), a woman who lives in his neighborhood. Mick is attracted to Nicki, and the feeling is mutual, but his friend Johnno (Nathan Thomas) warns him that Nicki is involved with Si (Paul McNeilly), a half-crazy rounder who loves to start fights. Mick asks Nicki about Si, and after she reassures him that Si's just a pal, the two spend the night together. However, Si has a very different take on this matter, and when Nicki learns that Johnno has been beaten silly by Si, his desire to confront the bully is tempered by his paranoia, which is only heightened by the Prozac. New Town Original was the first feature film from writer and director Jason Ford, who reportedly made the movie on a budget of only 75,000 pounds (142,000 dollars in American currency).
