Synopsis
A look at skin, "this thing that keeps our insides in," as narrator Alex Chadwick puts it, from dermatological, cultural and sociological angles. The hour visits Santa Fe, where photographer Spencer Tunick is seen on a shoot (his subjects: hundreds of naked people) and Nairobi, Kenya, where cosmetologist Irene Njoroge campaigns against skin-lightening products. Also in Africa, anthropologist Nina Jablonski explores why some people have darker skin than others. Her explanation: the hotter the climate, the darker the skin. It is, she says, "a biological adaptation to the environment."
