Synopsis by John Schietinger

Churchill, Manitoba, "the polar bear capital of the world," is the setting for this 1982 documentary on one of nature's most popular creatures. But as cute and lovable as polar bears may seem, they also have a dangerous side. One resident of Churchill explains how a polar bear chopped off his arm in a violent attack. The citizens of Churchill take great pride in their polar bears, but they do not hesitate to express that one must be cautious in dealing with an animal that can swim into icy waters and snatch a seal with one swipe. National Geographic: Polar Bear Alert shows both sides of polar bears in exploring the variety of research into their life patterns and behaviors.
