Synopsis by Alice Day
Folk art includes a very diverse group of works such as quilts, toys, weather vanes, decoys, painted furniture, tobacco store figures, and whirligigs. These objects were produced in the 18th and 19th centuries and were not considered to be part of the world of fine art. However, many people did think of them as art and began collecting the pieces about a century ago. National Gallery of Art: Collecting America: Folk Art and the Shelburne looks at the enormous collections of the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. The valuable items range from ornaments and paintings to porcelain dolls and tools.
