This Soviet production was the first of two 1937 films adapted from the Ukrainian operetta Natalka Poltavka. The plot gets underway when a rural beauty is railroaded into marriage with a man she does not love. The heroine loves another, but he, alas, can provide her with no money or property. Ultimately, true love triumphs over all, with an awful lot of singing along the way. The stars of the show are Ukrainian operatic luminaries M. Litvinenko Volmut and E. Patorzinski, both of whom are somewhat better singers than actors. Director E. Kavaleridze has elected to "open up" the original stage operetta with endless shots of landscapes and wheat fields.
