Synopsis by Mark Deming

Filmmaker Carla Subirana blends interviews and staged footage as she unravels a mystery from her family's past in this personal documentary. In 1940, Subirana's grandfather was murdered, and as she grew up he was an enigma in the family's history. As she became an adult, Subirana came to understand that her grandfather was killed under mysterious circumstances -- he was working with a band of anti-Franco leftists following the Spanish Civil War, and is believed to have joined a group of thieves who staged robberies and used the proceeds for the relief of the needy. With the passage of time, memories can fade, and as her mother and grandmother have both been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Subirana finds getting them to share their side of the story becomes increasingly difficult. Nadar (aka Swimming) was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
