Review by Jeremy Wheeler

After three years of the same Gremlins craze that spawned such favorites as Ghoulies, Critters, and the cheapo classic Hobgoblins came Roger Corman's family-fare masterpiece, Munchies. Sadly, there's nothing really magnificent about it, except to say that it exists and, yes, Harvey Korman does indeed wear a moustache and pompadour wig in the film. The puppets are blatantly fake looking, as are most of the actors. While a few of the gags are mildly amusing, this dud is miles away from ever finding a real heartbeat. Even an appearance by Robert Picardo -- which is rarely a bad thing -- doesn't help things out! Catch Munchies for some cheap laughs with the puppets, but beware when enduring it at its fullest, for it is an exercise in tedium. Oh, yes, and at no point does a Munchie do standup and surf on a pizza, as can be seen in the two more kiddie-friendly sequels, Munchie and Munchie Strikes Back.
