Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter
This video is part three of a five-part series, produced by PBS, that investigates the problem of drug and alcohol addiction in America. The series, hosted by Bill Moyers, looks at issues ranging from pathology to treatment. This episode focuses on recovery. Scientific research has shown that addiction creates neural pathways in the brain that encourage relapses in the well-intentioned recovering addict. The key to recovery may lie in group support systems, along with lifestyle changes, that create more constructive behavioral messages in the brain. Moyers visits two group programs, the Ridgeview Institute and Project Safe, to observe progress being made there by recovering addicts.
