Claus Strigel's documentary Moon Sun Flower Game: A True Fairytale represents an official follow-up and a sequel to Forough Farrokhzad's still-influential short-subject documentary The House is Black (1963). The tale that belied the earlier film is by now well-known: Farrokhzad journeyed to a leper colony in northern Iran and shot extensive footage of its inhabitants - footage that she then edited together into a 22-minute short. Perhaps the most striking and unexpected consequence of that experience, however, materialized off-camera, when a little boy at the village met Farrokhzad and left home with her, relocating to Germany in the process. With Moon Sun Flower Game, documentarian Strigel travels back to the original leper camp and observes the differences that have transpired in the community over the preceding 45 years, then carries her cameras to Germany, where Hossein Mansouri - an exiled poet of Persian extraction - embarks on an on-camera search for the little boy in question and uncovers a story more fantastic than anything in fiction, with direct ties to his own origins.
