This film captures the tumultuous times of the first World War through the eyes and experiences of the artist community of Montparnasse. The artistic and intellectual center in Paris, Montparnasse during the War era was brimming with European and American writers and artists. The film looks at some of the most colorful figures of the times, and the various ways they faced the outbreak of war. Picasso's famous painting Guernica is perhaps the best-known artwork of the period. Many, like Picasso, Modigliani, Braque, and Leger, joined the military. The film examines the different responses of the artists to the war.
