Synopsis by Sally Barber
Dutch painter and philosopher Piet Mondrian developed his own aesthetic theories, taking art beyond existing boundaries. The film Mondarin: From Naturalism to Abstraction traces the evolution of the painter's work from his early naturalistic style to his experiments with Cubism, and later his Paris and New York periods where he was influenced by urban life, culture, and architecture. With the collaboration of the world's finest galleries, this documentary explores Mondrian's own pictorial language which placed asymmetrical blocks of primary colors in harmonizing arrangements. Many of his works are examined in-depth in this film, shedding new light on the course of modernism in Western art.
