This video is part of a series that profiles some of the world's leading literary figures. This program is a study of German-born Thomas Mann. Mann wrote psychological novels with bourgeois heroes struggling to make sense of their place in their families and culture. The Magic Mountain and Death in Venice are two of his best-known works. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929. He renounced his German citizenship during the Nazi era, and resettled in the United States and then Switzerland. His life and works are a testament to his position as citizen of the world.
