Filmmakers Victoria Bruce and Karin Hayes began shooting their 2002 political documentary Missing Peace in order to track the 2002 presidential campaign of popular, yet controversial, Colombian politician and reformer Ingrid Betancourt. A fiery figure in Colombian politics, Betancourt was well known for taking on corrupt politicians with ties to the nation's drug lords, and subsequently drew many violent threats against her and her family's lives. Yet, with a hefty amount of support from the Colombian people, Betancourt successfully held congressional office prior to her 2002 presidential bid. Three months before election day, however, Betancourt made an appearance in a rural jungle region, was kidnapped by revolutionary forces, and became yet another victim of Colombia's 40-year-old civil war. As her family scrambled to obtain her safe return, they also desperately kept her campaign afloat until election day. Missing Peace was selected for viewing at the 2002 Slamdance Film Festival.
