Synopsis by Mark Deming

What if the authors of Hamlet and Don Quixote had crossed paths while trying to win the heart of the same woman? Writer and director Ines Paris proposes a possible answer to this question in this period comedy-drama. Leonor de Vibero (Elena Anaya) is a beautiful and talented woman who wants to pursue a career as an actress, and has been living in London, where she's fallen in love with William Shakespeare (Will Kemp), a playwright and leader of a struggling theatrical troupe. However, Leonor's father, a well-to-do businessman, doesn't approve of Shakespeare, and sends his daughter back to their native Spain to marry the Duke of Obanto (Jose Maria Pou). Heartbroken Shakespeare travels to Spain in hopes of winning Leonor back, but he soon learns he has more than one rival for her affections -- Leonor met Miguel de Cervantes (Juan Luis Galiardo), a writer fallen on hard times, not long after returning home, and hopes to inspire him by giving him a commission to write a comic play. Soon both Shakespeare and Cervantes are trying to persuade Leonor to leave behind the Duke of Obanto in favor of themselves, but in the meantime Leonor suggests that Shakespeare give her friend Cervantes some help with his latest writing project. Miguel y William also stars Geraldine Chaplin and Malena Alterio.
