This unexpected but welcome collection provides a glimpse into one of the more entertainingly sleazy programs ever to grace the cathode tube. Midnight Blue: The Deep Throat Special Edition compiles material that was broadcast on the legendary adult entertainment chat show Midnight Blue between 1975 and 1987. The main focus is a series of interviews with four major players in the Deep Throat saga: actors Harry Reems and Carol Connors, director Gerard Damiano and Linda Lovelace's ex-hubby/manager Chuck Traynor. Al Goldstein holds court in most of the interview segments and handles the task with greater skill than his public persona might lead the casual viewer to believe. While he's capable of playing the sleazy court jester (as he does with Carol Connors), he's also capable of showing a different face with his other interview subjects: the affable Reems brings out Goldstein's flair for caustic wit, Traynor brings out his political mindset and Damiano brings out an unexpectedly intellectual level of insight into the psychology behind vintage adult cinema. Sandwiched between the interviews are a series of ads and comedy segments that appeared on the shows, including a memorable advice segment from Jackie Park that doubles as an amusingly angry lecture for the show's male viewers. In short, Midnight Blue: The Deep Throat Special Edition is definitely a special-interest item, but those interested in the controversy surrounding Deep Throat (or Al Goldstein, for that matter) will find plenty to amuse and enlighten here.
