Synopsis by Jonathan Crow
Hemchandra Chunder directs this musical wartime drama about an impoverished though straight-laced teacher, Ramesh (K. L. Saigal), who is raising his teenaged sister Bimala (Akhtar Jehan). He falls for Krishna (Sumitra Devi) the beautiful daughter of a village zamindar. Ramesh declines the marriage proposal when her father demands that he settle in his village. Instead, the teacher becomes a stage singer and moves to Calcutta, which is under attack by the Japanese. In between taking cover from the odd bombing raid, Ramesh falls in love with Rekha (Chandrabati Devi), the star of a stage company.
