Argentinean university professor Juan Antin directs the animated feature film Mercano el Martiano. Originally the star of two-minute shorts on the Much Music channel and Canada's Splat cartoon network, Mercano is a green alien from Mars who goes to Earth seeking revenge for his dog, who was crushed by a space probe. He crash-lands in Buenos Aires and rightfully finds it difficult adjusting to the planet's advanced consumer capitalism. Logging on to the Internet, he unsuccessfully tries to phone home and ends up making an online Earth friend named Julian. Mercano soon finds himself kidnapped by a corporation who wants use his Martian knowledge to develop a new product. The conclusion finds the hero in a combination of cartoon violence and sarcastic humor. Mercano el Martiano was screened at the 2003 San Sebastian Film Festival.
