When Howard Helmes (Rowland Lee) comes to the big city as the personal secretary to a traction magnate (Edwin Jobson), it turns out to be his downfall. He makes a killing in the stock market and neglects his wife Mary (Irene Hunt) and their child (Joey Jacobs) to have an affair with Clarice Phillips (Josie Sedgwick). But when Mary discovers the affair, she arrives on Clarice's doorstep with the boy, and the sight of the child melts her heart. Meanwhile, the magnate also discovers Helmes' affair, so he ruins him on Wall Street and then fires him. When Helmes goes to Clarice for comfort, she sends him back to Mary. The couple return to their small town, sadder but wiser, to start over again.
