Temporary paymaster Hawkeye (Alan Alda) finds himself in possession of an expected monetary surplus. He generously uses the money to help the orphans under the care of Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) -- only to discover that the Army wants the cash back, and wants it now. As Trapper (Wayne Rogers) tries to save the day in a marathon poker game, on another front, Frank (Larry Linville) tries to make both the women in his life happy, a scheme doomed to hilarious failure.
