Many B-Western series employed a "haunted house" episode and Marshal of Amarillo is certainly not the worst of the hybrid genre. As always, the mysterious goings-on are the works of a criminal rather than occult occurrences that may have frightened the target audience for this sort of thing, the small fry. Lane is his heroic self and the final stagecoach battle is done with Republic's sure feel for speed and excitement. Eddy Waller as the comic relief, makes the most of his opportunities and Roy Barcroft, usually the chief menace in a Republic western, makes a fine red herring this time around, as does Denver Pyle (in his second year in films) as the ghoulish night clerk. Lane, Waller, Barcroft and leading lady Mildred Coles were reunited for the next entry in the Lane series, Desperadoes of Dodge City (1948).
