Sixteen-year-old Maria Chapdelaine (Sara Montpetit) is part of a pioneer family living in rural Québec. She falls in love with Francois Paradis (Émile Schneider). But when she finally agrees to marry him, tragedy strikes. Two suitors then ask for her hand in marriage: Eutrope Gagnon (Antoine Olivier Pilon), her family’s closest neighbor, and Lorenzo Surprenant (Robert Naylor), a man who is planning to move to the United States. The movie, based on Louis Hémon’s novel of the same name, is written and directed by Sébastien Pilote.
