Synopsis by Mark Deming

An unexpected death sends shock waves through a small Austrian community in this moody drama. A car is found one morning on the outskirts of town with the bodies of three teenagers inside. The three young men clearly committed suicide, running a hose from the exhaust pipe to the interior, but they left no note explaining why they chose to kill themselves, and their family and friends are uniformly puzzled by their actions. The young friends of the three victims are confused as they come to terms with the mortality of their peers, and their parents and older relatives are struck dumb by their pain, unable to express the agony and loss brought on by the suicides. The struggle of the parents to smother the agony the deaths have caused only serves to further confuse the town's youngsters as they search for ways to make sense of the tragedy. Maerz (aka March) was the first feature film from actor turned director Haendl Klaus, and was an official selection at the 2008 Locarno Film Festival.
