Synopsis by Nathan Southern

Italian composer Umberto Giordano's idillio moderno opera Marcella was long believed destroyed during World War II, but this 2007 version emerged from the composer's manuscript and commemorated the centenary of the work's authorship. It tells of a poor young artist girl who engages in a casual affair, and then discovers with horror that the great love of her life is a prince in disguise. This production stars Serena Daolio as Marcella, Danilo Formaggia as Giorgio and Pierluigi Dilengite as Drasco; The Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia and The Slovak Chamber Choir, under the baton of Manlio Benzi, provide musical accompaniment. Alessio Pizzech directs for the stage. The production was mounted at the Palazzo Ducale in August 2007 as part of the 33rd Festival of the Valle D'Itria.
