Director J. Stuart Blackton was a cinema pioneer, but by 1920, the kind of heavy, self-righteous melodrama he specialized in was outdated. Here, he tells the story of Dr. John Worthing (Herbert Rawlinson), who is diligently working on a serum for tuberculosis when he discovers that his sweetheart, Claire Eaton (Eulalie Jensen), has been keeping time with Hugh Conway (Warren Chandler), a wealthy importer. This sends him into the depths of depression and he sinks into a life of booze and opium. Worthing ends up in a hospital run by a colleague, Dr. Eliot (Louis Dean), who takes him to the country for a cure. There he falls in love with his nurse, Eve Cartier (May McAvoy). Conway reappears and tries to steal Eve's affections, but he's unsuccessful. The good doctor returns to his work with faithful Eve at his side.
