Synopsis by Alice Day

As early man began to migrate across continents millions of years ago, he began to encounter cold weather in Asia and Europe. In order to survive, he had to devise ways to keep warm, and learn to hunt different animals. The development of fire enabled these groups to have heat and energy for preparing meals. Making of Mankind: Beyond Africa examines the development of Peking Man, as host and paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey visits Chou Koutien in China. Leakey offers commentary about the ability of humans to speak, and how speech may have evolved.
