Synopsis by Alice Day

Theories regarding early man's development in walking with a two-legged gait are examined in Making of Mankind: One Small Step. Host Richard Leakey's mother, anthropologist Mary Leakey appears in a segment showing her discovery of the oldest footprints ever found, uncovered at the Olduvai Gorge in East Africa. Some researchers think that walking on two legs was an adaptation to moving over the hot sands of savannahs. The Lucy skeleton, found in Ethiopia in 1974, is an adult female whose discovery caused great excitement among anthropologists.
