In traditional Hawaiian culture, the moon is considered to be a harbinger of powerful forces; Hawaiian legend has it that the phases of the moon can hold the difference between success and failure in planting crops, fishing, or other activities in which man attempts to reap the bounties of nature. David Kalama: Mahina is a documentary which explores the roots of lunar mythology in Island culture, including the importance of rhythms and cycles of natural life in Hawaii, as well as chants and ceremonies created to celebrate the moon's phases.
