Synopsis by Mark Deming

A handful of children discover an unusual chair offers them more than just a comfy place to sit in this fantasy from Polish filmmaker Andrzej Maleszka. A bolt of lightning fells a mighty oak tree during a storm, and a handful of workmen take apart the tree, using the wood to make different household objects. What the craftsmen don't know is the tree has magical properties; one of them turns the oak into a chair, and three children in the household where it ends up, Tosia (Maja Tomawska), Philip (Filip Fabis) and Kuki (Adam Szczegola) discover it will grant any wishes you make while seated in it. At first, the kids are content to have the chair bring them pizza any time they like, but when their folks go away on a trip and they're left in the care of their grumpy aunt, their wishes get them into a tough spot and they have to use the chair's magic to find their parents. Magiczne Drzewo (aka The Magic Tree) was a prizewinner at the 2009 Chicago International Children's Film Festival.
