Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

In an excellently crafted documentary (or pseudo-documentary, it is hard to tell), director Verena Rudoph arrives in New York with a camera and determination -- she wants to track down the story of her Aunt Lucy who left Germany in 1935 for America and essentially disappeared. With honky-tonk music in the background and the help of some amusing old, old ladies who were Lucy's friends, as well as Lucy's adopted black daughter, a story -- or a legend -- emerges. Apparently Lucy first did a successful stint as a Broadway singer and dancer, but her love of a nip to bolster her spirits had the opposite effect on her performance, and she disappeared from sight for awhile. It is rumored she made it big on the stock market and then settled in to play some serious poker with a group of female gamblers -- and what happens next is speculation.
