Synopsis by Nathan Southern

The tightly-knit and understated South Korean character study Love is a Crazy Thing (AKA Yeon-Ae) dramatizes episodes from the life of Eo-jin (Jeon Mi-seon), a single mother with few career options in sight. Because Eo grapples with her need to earn a paycheck and provide for her two children, she ultimately resorts to accepting a job as a "bar girl," or a barmaid hired as a frequent companion for male customers at a local club. When she refuses to sleep with her clients, her indignance draws the ire of the proprietor, Mrs. Kim (Kim Ji-suk). Eo nonetheless manages to hold down the job, and in time falls for a kind-hearted businessman who frequents the establishment, Min-su (Jang Hyeon-seong). Yeon-Ae's inappropriate English-language title plagued it upon stateside release; it thus experienced an all-too-brief U.S. theatrical run. The film nonetheless drew critical kudos for its ensemble of multidimensional characterizations and exemplary performances. Song Min-ho and Seo Shin-Hae authored the original script.
