Synopsis by Jason Buchanan
A Chinese-Malay girl from Penang arrives in Kuala Lampur to work at her aunt's modest food stall, only to be drawn into the dangerous world of prostitution as a result of naiveté and misunderstanding. Ah Peng is from the provinces, and she isn't familiar with life in the big city. Upon arriving in Penang, the innocent Ah Peng shows little interest in exploring her new urban environment, instead remaining fixated on her work and her growing relationship with kindly younger cousin Mei. One day, while venturing into a public telephone booth to check in with her family and friends back home, Ah Peng catches the eye of John. Despite Ah Peng's claims of a boyfriend back home, John is relentless in his pursuit of the young girl. Eventually, Ah Peng gives in to her tenacious suitor. When John describes to Ah Peng precisely what being a pimp entails, the country girl seems completely oblivious to the point he is attempting to make. Later, when John disappears, Ah Peng's fate becomes sealed by grim circumstance.
