Based on the science fiction novels by Hajime Kanzaka, Lost Universe takes place in what is called the Black World. Here, the demi-gods of other universes (such as the Red World in which The Slayers takes place) manifest themselves as great spaceships imbued with consciousness known as Lost Ships. Kane Blueriver, the protagonist, gains one of these ships, the Sword Breaker, through an inheritance and together with Canal, his android best friend, he travels the universe doing mercenary work, from bounty hunting to providing bodyguard services. The evil crime syndicate Nightmare is growing harder and harder to ignore, however, and soon Hajime and Canal find themselves uncovering secrets about the nature of the Lost Ships and about the Nightmare syndicate.
