Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
In this French melodrama, Mathias (Jean-Pierre Mocky) is a con-man who persuades newly-rich people to trade in their good furniture for the elaborate junk he is selling. They do it because they believe Mathias is a nobleman of some sort. When his son (Robert Benoit) and his son's fiancee come to visit, Mathias is careful not to start anything with the woman, even though she is clearly fascinated by him and he is attracted to her. The jealous son is not persuaded, though, and shoots his father. The dying Mathias lovingly arranges to make it seem as though he committed suicide.
