In the 19th century, the Chinese empire was powerless to prevent the British from using their military might to force the Chinese to accept Britain's flooding the country with Indian opium in order to take Chinese silver and gold out of the country for a profit. However, just because they were not able to prevent it does not mean that the Chinese were unaware of how injurious the trade was, nor did they fail to resent it. In this film, a servant of the Emperor attempts to rectify the situation and winds up precipitating the disastrous Opium War, which further weakened Chinese sovereignty.
