In the opening chapter of the Western serial Lightning Bryce, Double O cowboy Sky Bryce, known colloquially as "Lightning" (Jack Hoxie), rescues pretty Kate Arnold (Ann Little) from a runaway stage, unaware that the girl's father is Bryce Sr.'s partner in a gold mine. In the desert, Malcolm Arnold and John Bryce become victims of a La Conche Indian (Steve Clemente), who blows "mystic vapors" on the latter. Crazed from the vapors, Bryce shoots his partner and then wanders into the desert. Near death, he reaches Stilwell, where nasty sheriff's deputy Powder Solvang (Paul Hurst) notices a couple of gold nuggets apparently stolen from the La Conches. With his dying breath, Bryce leaves two clues to the whereabouts of the Ingot gold claim: a Bowie knife and a piece of string. By winding the string around the knife, Lightning or Kate will learn the location of the mine. In the background, the veiled Mystery Woman (Jill Woodward) stealthily observes the goings-on.
