Synopsis by Mark Deming

Filmmaker Moussa Toure offers a witty but powerful look at a small insect that poses a major threat in this documentary. In the 21st Century, mosquitoes and the malaria that they spread are still a serious matter in much of the Third World, and despite efforts by scientists to control the insects, they stubbornly refuse to go away. As filmmaker Toure sees it, the mosquito is a bit like a technician that has found a way to work around any obstacle mankind puts before it, and also a bit like a cousin that's a frequent, uninvited presence, leaving trouble in its wake. In Les Techniciens nos Cousins, Toure looks at some of the many failed efforts to wipe out mosquitoes and interviews a few of the many people in Africa who have been living with the consequences of Malaria and have their own opinions about the battle to wipe out the illness. Les Techniciens nos Cousins was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
