Les Casablancais is a comedy which looks at that city through the lives of three characters -- a book dealer, a young teacher and a student -- whose individual problems bring them together. The book dealer receives a letter, which forces him to re-examine his life; the teacher applies for a passport, which triggers absurd investigations; the student becomes the victim of a tragic manipulation because of a misunderstanding between him and his instructor. While making the audience laugh, the film also draws an accurate portrait of a city and its inhabitants and their fears of fundamentalist activities and unpredictable authorities. Les Casablanncais was screened at the International Forum of New Cinema section of the 49th Berlin Film Festival, 1999.
