Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

Mixing opera singers with a great Broadway score, Bernstein conducts such luminaries as Leo Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa singing the score of West Side Story in this documentary of a four-day recording session in 1984. There is footage of early rehearsals in Bernstein's home, piano run-throughs of many songs, and interviews and commentary on Bernstein by the principals. The documentary focuses on Bernstein doing what he does best, with one of his best scores and some of the day's best singers. Songs include "Tonight," "Something's Coming," "Maria," and "I Feel Pretty."
