Synopsis by Jason Buchanan
When Le Roi de Lahore first premiered at the Palais Garnier in 1877, the undeniable success of the performance soon launched composer Jules Massenet to international superstardom. A truly grand-opéra in every sense of the phrase, Le Roi de Lahore was staged at Paris opera houses no less than fifty-seven times in the two years that followed. With this release, opera fans can enjoy all of the extravagant opulence of those original performances as the late Marcello Viotti leads a Venetian production that will transform any living room into a world class opera house.
