Francesco Cavalli's 1641 Didone wears a historical footnote, as the earliest surviving opera adapted from the Dido/Trojan warrior romance in Virgil's Aeneid. This 2011 production by Les Arts Florissants stars Anna Bonitatibus in the title role, Kresimir Spicer as Enea, Xavier Sabata as Iarba, and Maria Streijffert as Ecuba. William Christie conducts, Clément Hervieu-Léger directs for the stage, Éric Ruf designed the sets, and Caroline De Vivaise created the costumes.
