Synopsis by Gönül Dönmez-Colin

Kuldesak focuses on four young inhabitants of Jakarta in the 1990s. They all have dreams, but sometimes life forces them to make radical choices. Aksan dreams of making a film. All he needs is money. His rich father does not want his son to become a filmmaker. Aksan, who does not have enough drive to make his dream come true, decides to steal from his father. André is an unhappy musician who identifies with rock idol Kurt Cobain and his world-famous suicide. He seeks comfort from a wandering sooth-sayer. Dina, who sells tickets at a movie theatre, is obsessed with the host of a popular TV show. She can no longer distinguish dreams from reality. Lina works for an advertising agency where she is pressed by her boss to work overtime. One night, she gets raped. Instead of reporting the event to the police, she decides to take the law into her own hands. The film, which came out of the newly formed collective of young filmmakers, actors, and musicians operating under the name Day 4 Night Film Workshop, uses comedy to portray city life in Jakarta, but the comedy reflects the tragedy of loneliness. Kuldesak had its international premiere at the 1999 International Film Festival in Rotterdam.
