Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
In Bulgaria, college students are expected to spend their summer holidays working on collective farms for little or no pay unless they have a doctor's note excusing them for health reasons. In this story, Sashko is trying to earn some money during the summer and gets an exception. Then he lands a job drilling a well in the "villa zone," near Sofia, where the powerful (and wealthy) can get away with just about anything. When he discovers the bones of a corpse, the owner of a villa tries to have a required investigation quashed because it will delay construction. Everybody agrees except the student, who has idealistic reasons not to go along, and he suffers for them.
