This film is part of a five volume, ten-hour series on the Korean Conflict. It was produced by Korean television, and provides a Korean perspective on the events there that continue to influence world politics. Narrated by James Whitmore, the series looks at the origins of the conflict, and the ensuing war between the North and the South, aided respectively by the Soviet and Chinese Communists, and the United Nations, led by the United States. The conflict in Korea is acknowledged as marking the inception of the Cold War. In this second volume, the filmmakers look at the tumultuous economic conditions in South Korea. With the government there in shambles, the Communist forces in the north launched a surprise invasion, and Seoul, the southern capital, fell to the North in three days. The United States, under the leadership of General MacArthur, entered the affray. The story is told with never-before-seen film footage and first-person accounts.
