Sporting elaborate make-up, futuristic leather and vinyl costumes, huge platform boots, and one of the most elaborate stage shows in rock and roll, Kiss was one of the biggest bands in America -- perhaps the biggest -- between 1975 and 1980. However, the band's original lineup splintered after the departures of drummer Peter Criss in 1980 and guitarist Ace Frehley in 1982, and while bassist Gene Simmons and vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley kept the band going with new members, many die-hard fans felt that the group was never the same again, especially after they stopped using their famous make-up and costumes in 1983. In 1996, Kiss fans around the world got the news they'd long been dreaming of when Simmons, Stanley, Frehley, and Criss announced that they were reforming the original Kiss lineup, complete with original make-up and a multi-million dollar stage show, for a world tour, which became the top-grossing touring attraction of 1996 and 1997.
